Support Network: Coffee & Conversation is an informal drop-in program for anyone whose life is affected by seizures. The group meets the last Monday of each month, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. Epilepsy is discussed in general, as well as personal concerns, successes or problems you may be having with the disorder. Snacks & refreshments are provided. Parent to parent support network pairs parents (often with newly diagnosed children) with other parents who have learned to cope through experience. We attempt to link parents that have children with similar ages and seizure type. Parents call the SAEA office to register and the association staff matches them with a parent (who has agreed to become part of the network) to share experiences and coping strategies. Referrals are requested for various reasons and topics to other social service agencies in the community. Such as Lethbridge Housing, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, Persons with Developmental Disabilities, Quest program, etc. In addition, individuals and families request information on medical professionals that treat epilepsy in Southern Alberta. Advocacy through the SAEA is the empowerment of vulnerable people and promotes respect for their dignity, rights and freedoms. Self-Advocacy - an individual, family or the SAEA speak or act in pursuit needs or interests,. That individuals and families affected with epilepsy value themselves and believe that by speaking out, they can change their status in society. Citizen Advocacy - a one-on-one partnership, involving a client of the SAEA. The goals are to provide emotional support, friendship and when appropriate, to speak for the client. It is a relationship built on mutual respect, where SAEA functions as though the clients’ interests are its own. Systemic Advocacy - is concerned with policy, procedure and reform at the institutional level. SAEA would point out built-in problems with structures, policies and procedures in an institution which hinders the rights, freedoms and dignity of it clients. Legislative Advocacy - approval from the Board of Directors would be necessary for the process of lobbying members of parliament to pass laws that would protect the SAEA clients. Client Crisis Program
offers assistance to clients of the SAEA who are low-income earners. to page 2 of Programs and Services |
