How to effectively engage (and retain!) volunteers

Whether you work in a paid position or lead an all volunteer organization, ask yourself – ‘do volunteers – both current and potential – perceive our organization as one they would like to join and, more importantly, do they want to stay once they are there? Identifying and involving volunteers in meaningful volunteer roles includes planning, interpreting trends, creating innovative programs and demonstrating a commitment to meet the volunteer’s needs. Thoughtful and deliberate position design; appropriate screening and a commitment to supervision and recognition are key components of ensuring a volunteer’s experience with your organization will be a positive one.

Leveraging the Leadership Volunteer

It has been the buzz lately – ‘leadership’ volunteerism.  What is it?  Will it affect me?  Will I have to adapt my volunteer program to more effectively manage this kind of volunteer?  WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?  This is your opportunity to develop meaningful opportunities for leadership volunteers. You will be challenged and encouraged to re-think the role you currently fill.  If you are interested in ‘thinking outside the box’, then this is a workshop you can’t miss.

Susan J. Ellis is President of Energize, Inc., a Philadelphia-based training, consulting and publishing firm she founded in 1977, specializing in volunteerism.  Susan has assisted clients throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Australia since to create or strengthen their volunteer corps.  She is the author/co-author of 11 books, including ‘The Volunteer Recruitment Book’.  Her innovative web site, www.energizeinc.com, has won international recognition as a premiere resource for volunteer program leaders. Susan is editor of the field’s first online journal, e-Volunteerism, a joint project launched in 2000 with Steve McCurley.

Evaluating Volunteers

Create a successful and rewarding "evaluation strategy" that will work wonders in your organization.  Learn how to identify the appropriate components of an evaluation strategy and understand the basic 8 steps that need to be in place to ensure your organization can deliver an effective evaluation procedure for your volunteers.  Learn the various stages of implementation and the importance of keeping in touch with them as often as possible.  A hands-on, experiential workshop that will take the "guessing" out of the evaluation process.

Gillian Nish was born and raised in southern Alberta and is a graduate of the Lethbridge Community College.  She has been General Manager of Chinook Country Tourist Association; Executive Director of the Tourism Industry Association of Alberta (Calgary) where she introduced the province-wide slogan entitled:  "Smile, You're A Tourist Attraction!"  In 1988, she moved back to Lethbridge and started her own company, execuserv plus inc., specializing in tourism, small business management, education and training programs.  Gillian's no-nonsense, down-to-earth presentation style, sprinkled with energy, knowledge and enthusiasm, will convince you that it can be an exciting and very worthwhile process to learn to evaluate the volunteers in your organization, and that this process really works!

Verna Masuda

Bringing out the Best in People

Tapping the strengths of your volunteers is one of the topics requested by our membership for further exploration.  Inspire and energize yourself and your staff/volunteers to heightened performance and productivity with this workshop focusing directly on what drives motivation.  You will take away an action plan for achieving measurable and observable positive results from your team.  Workshop topics include: How to Motivate Today's Volunteers, Why People Do What They Do, The Role of Values in the Workplace; The High Cost of Poor Motivation, Changing Behaviour, Setting and Attaining Goals and Action Planning.

Verna Masuda was born in Lethbridge and has made this her permanent home in spite of many years questioning the lure of a really large city.  Like many people she used to sit at work each day wondering if this is all there is?  Where was the challenge?  The freedom of entrepreneurship looked attractive, so she started her first business, a women's retail clothing store, in 1979.  After managing two retail stores, Verna found that entrepreneurship was the life for her.  She managed The Entrepreneurial Centre for five years, then founded and managed a local Private Vocational School for ten.  Today Verna is about to finish a business degree.  She is teaching others how to start businesses, consulting with organizations on how to make the workplace more exciting and writing a business plan for a new direct sales business in the health field that she will eventually take global.
