NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

SOME HELPFUL SUPPLEMENTS - DR. CHENEY

CCIS: Supplements and Devices Glossary

My postscript:[These supplements are mentioned regarding CFS but would be useful for ANY autoimmune disease(Lyme Disease, Chemical Sensitivities Disorders,MS, Lupus, Diabetes, etc, etc.]

1.Co-enzyme Q-10
2.Magnesium Complex
3.Reduced-L-glutathione
4.Sterling Spring Water Purifier
5.Ultrazyme

Co-enzyme Q-10

Co-enzyme Q-10 (200 mg lozenge) used crushed and placed under the tongue can help promote energy and acts as an anti-oxidant in the critical energy production areas of the mitochondria. Some patients will find just as much benefit at lower doses such as one-quarter (50mg) to one-half (100mg) of a lozenge.

Flax Seed Oil

Flax Seed Oil at one gram capsule three times daily with food provides omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 essential fatty acids (EFA's). EFA's are very important in cell membrane and immune function and intracellular regulation of the inflammatory process. Low fat diets can place one at risk for EFA deficiency. Some patients may benefit from the addition of extra omega-6 EFA's (Evening primrose oil or borage oil) since flax seed oil is predominantly omega-3. Red blood cell EFA testing can help make this important decision. Correcting EFA deficiencies can be important in reducing skin and nail problems and joint complaints. Flax seed oil can help regulate menses and reduce PMS through its conversion by gut bacteria into adaptogenic estrogen-like compounds.

Magnesium Complex

Magnesium Complex contains magnesium glycinate (100 mg of magnesium in each capsule). Magnesium glycinate contains magnesium chelated to the smallest amino acid - glycine. It has superior bioavailability and transports well across the blood brain barrier and into cells. Magnesium blocks NMDA receptor mediated neurotoxicity and glycine has muscle relaxant properties and is a component of the potent anti-oxidant - glutathione. We recommend two or three tablets of magnesium complex with magnesium glycinate at bedtime. Magnesium can also improve sleep. Some patients may experience loose stools or diarrhea with magnesium.

P-5-P Plus

P-5-P Plus contains magnesium glycinate (100 mg of magnesium in each capsule) and a highly bioactive B6 metabolite known as P-5-P or pyridoxal-5-phosphate. P-5-P added to magnesium glycinate may also help improve energy and therefore, one or two P-5-P Plus capsules should be taken in the morning. P-5-P can help treat functional pyridoxine (B6) deficiency in the brain for which there is some evidence in CFS patients. P-5-P Plus also contains magnesium glycinate or magnesium chelated to the smallest amino acid - glycine. Magnesium glycinate has superior bioavailability and transports well across the blood brain barrier and into cells. Magnesium blocks NMDA receptor mediated neurotoxicity and glycine has muscle relaxant properties and is a component of the potent anti-oxidant - glutathione.

Reduced-L-glutathione

Reduced-L-glutathione (75 mg) is an important tri-peptide used in both major detoxification pathways in the liver and a very important anti-oxidant in all other cells of the body. Most CFS patients are deficient in this most critical intracellular compound. Deficiency is often suggested by chronic headaches. We recommend starting at two capsules three times daily with food during the first week, then doubling to four tablets three times daily with food for one week, then reducing to one to two capsules three times daily with food as a maintenance dose. If headaches worsen with dose reduction then maintain high doses for another week. Use higher doses during relapses if symptoms are improved on high doses. A few patients with unrecognized defects in liver sulfoxidation can be made worse on high doses of glutathione. Such defects are suggested by symptoms which worsen as the glutathione dosage is raised.

Silymarin - (from Milk Thistle)

Silymarin (150 mg) is a bioflanonoid which re-cycles glutathione to its reduced (active) state and promotes other functional improvements in the liver. We recommend 150 mg capsules taken twice daily.

Sterling Spring Water Purifier

Sterling Spring Water Purifier is a high quality, economical counter-top or single element unit and an under the counter or dual element unit (recommended) for water filtration. These units can remove heavy metals such as lead, chemicals such as chlorine, certain microbes and also improves taste. A pre-filter element removes gross particulate matter and is replaced every 3-4 months depending on use and pre-filter water quality. The main filter is replaced annually unless pre-filter water quality is poor.

Ultra-GLA

Ultra-GLA contains Borage oil and is a source of omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFA's). EFA's are very important in cell membrane and immune function and intracellular regulation of the inflammatory process. Low fat diets can place one at risk for EFA deficiency. Some patients may benefit from the addition of extra omega-6 EFA's found in borage oil. Red blood cell EFA testing can help make this important decision. Correcting EFA deficiencies can be important in reducing skin and nail problems and joint complaints.

Ultrazyme

Ultrazyme is an excellent polyvalent digestive enzyme which can greatly improve protein digestion and therefore improve gut ecology and function. We recommend one to two capsules with each meal.

THOSE AMAZING AMINO ACIDS

Excerpts from Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible
Copyright C 1985, 1991 by Earl Mindelll & Hester Mundis

There are 22 known amino acids. Eight of these are called essential amino acids because they cannot be manufactured by the human body and must be obtained from food or supplements.

*Essential amino acids are marked with asterisks

Alanine, Arginine, Asparagine, Aspartic acid, Cysteine,Cystine, Glutamic acid, Glutamine,Glycine, *Histidine(considered essential only for infants and children, *Isoleucine, *Leucine,*Lysine, *Methionine,Ornithine,*Phenylalanine, Proline,Serine *Threonine, *Tryptophan, and *Valine.

N-ACETYL CYSTEINE

The high level of safety and variety of antioxidant actions of NAC suggest it as a very promising new tool for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. (Including MS and CFS/ME.)

High dose NAC has produced modest improvement in several patients early in treatment and then tends to plateau. Some diseases indicate an imbalance in antioxidant enzyme activity. Although a few patients claimed some benefit from more traditional antioxidant therapies (vitamins A,C,E,B2, and selenium), most patients' improvement may coincide with improved free radical status.

This suggests that these enzyme abnormalities are not primary in these disorders but occur secondary to whatever gene defects trigger excess free radical activity .This indicates the possibility that if improvement in the antioxidant status occurs, the potential exists for arresting progression of the disease and in some cases an improvement in patient condition.

NAC is a better researched, more effective, and safer antioxidant than L-cysteine. This is because NAC is not only less toxic than L-cysteine, it is much more effective in raising glutathione levels. NAC's mucus loosening effects in lung diseases is explained by its ability to increase glutathione production, rather than by acting directly on the muscus itself Glutathione is a cysteine-containing tripeptide that is also a powerful antioxidant.

NAC has the ability to decrease cellular damage from free radicals as well as prevent damage to human bronchial tubes from tobacco smoke. Both scientists and physicians are showing an interest in N-acetyl cysteine because of the enormous toll that free- radical damage takes in so many medical conditions.
