Box Social by Cheerful Crimson Brim Belles

On Sunday Sept 14th,2008  an "Unbirthday" Box Social was disorganized  by Cheerful Crimson Brim Belles and held at the beautiful home of Betty and Lee Mainprise, in the country near Claresholm,

We were blessed with a wonderful warm, sunny  day so the whole event was able to take place outside on the very big deck.  At 3:30 in the afternoon, guests began to arrive and after signing the guest book, were relieved of their beautifully decorated boxes which were taken to the cold room in the basement, for later. They were escorted to the deck where live music was being played by friends and neighbours, of the host Lee.
(  )  I Think he secretly was scared of being alone amid a bunch of Red Hatters, when actually a few of the chapteretts had brought along their husbands so Lee would not have been alone!

As the ladies sipped on ice cold juice the men played well known "oldies" with the  violin mastered by a gentleman of 87 with flying fingers. The  guitars capably "twanged" merrily by local ranchers.  Queen Sandy of Stavely , Country Angels and Empress Eileen even tried out an old fashioned waltz! Much to the amusement of those watching.

After a while the men were ready for a break so it was the ideal time for a "Treasure Hunt"
Each person was given a card which was printed with a clue to tell them where their loot was hidden.  However, some of the treasure was hidden quite close to the house to accommodate any one who did not wish to walk very far!  It was HOT!  The ranchers, however, set off to find their loot  hidden further away with only an obscure(?)  clue to help them!
FINALLY, when the stragglers came back I thought  heard mutterings like "WELL I DId find the pump house but it was the wrong one! or " Who would have thought that a long pipe had been a smoke stack!   All was well however, as they soothed themselves by munching on their treasure.

After a little more music Empress Eileen read a poem in keeping with the pioneer theme called   "The Old Flour Sack".

This was followed by distribution of the Boxes of food. Unless a guest had allergies and wanted to eat from their own box, everyone had a box brought by someone else.  It was fun to watch every one opening these and to hear the hush that befell the gathering! Very soon the only the sounds that issued forth were of contentment  interspersed with  "Umm good!  A few "Yums'! and "Ohs" and "Boy this is tasty"!

Before lids could be popped back on the boxes, Lee came out with a BIG tray of steaming corn on the cob which he had picked fresh from his garden, that morning.  Even though everyone declared that they were full up, no one declined the corn, and some even had two!
Tea coffee and juice were served . More music was played and all to soon it was time to leave as some folks have engagements later in the evening. At that point, before people could take off, Lady Betty come out with a BIG box and declared that as we were having an unbirthday party everyone  could choose an unbirthday gift to take home.

The raffle was drawn, Which was a Red Hat  WELCOME wooden door  hanging , with Rose from Cinnamon Sisters the Big winner.

As folks started to depart, the men played more music and after hugs were exchanged the chapteretts all agreed that the afternoon was a huge success.

It was only after all had gone that Betty and I realized that we had not had time to fit in the croquet game that Lee had set up on the front lawn!! We will be able to include it another time!
